Before electric soldering irons became available, tinsmiths would use heated "copper" irons made of a wooden handle, iron shank, and copper tips formed into different shapes. Planishing hammers, chasing hammers, creasing hammers, and setting down hammers are among the most common, as well as ball peen hammers. Solder was then used to join the pieces together a soldering iron and fire pot were needed to do this. Straight and curved anvils (stakes) were used to turn and roll the edges of the tin. The tin was flattened on an anvil made of a block of steel. In addition to the big shears anchored in a hole in his bench, he used hand snips and nippers for cutting. The simple shapes made by the tinsmith require tools similar to those of a coppersmith. The respective properties of the metals mean that corrosion once started is likely to be rapid. A piece of tinware may develop rust if the tin coating has worn away or been cut in the metal. However, the tinplate's quality depends on the iron or steel being free from rust and the surface being in an unbroken coating. Tin's non-rusting qualities make it an invaluable coating. Today's tinplate is mild steel electroplated with tin. However, it could be alloyed with lead and copper to make pewter or alloyed with copper alone to produce bronze. Pure tin is an expensive and soft metal and it is not practical to use it alone. Certificates submitted by colonial governors to the British Board of Trade following the Act indicate that no tinplate works then existed though there were several slitting mills, some described as slitting and rolling mills. The British Iron Act of 1750 prohibited (among other things) the erection of new rolling mills, which prevented the erection of new tinplate works in America until after the American Revolution. Previously Great Britain had imported most tinplate from Hamburg. This process was first discovered in the 16th century, with the development of the British tinplate address in 1661 with a patent to Dud Dudley and William Chamberlayne. Tinplate consists of sheet iron coated with tin and then run through rollers. Many young tinsmiths took to the road as peddlers or tinkers to save enough money to open a shop in town. Later he tackled more complicated pieces such as chandeliers and crooked-spout coffee pots.Īfter his apprenticeship was completed, he then became a journeyman, not yet being a master smith employing others. Next, he formed objects such as milk pails, basins, or cake and pie pans. He learned first to make cake stamps ( cookie cutters), pillboxes and other simple items. Finally, he was allowed to cut out and complete objects. Later he would trace patterns on sheets and cut them out, then soldering joints, and inserting rivets. Apprenticeships were considered "indentures" and an apprentice would start first with simply cleaning the shop, polishing tools, keeping the fires lit, filing sharp edges, and polishing finished pieces. The tinsmith learned his trade, like many other artisans, by serving an apprenticeship of 4 to 6 years with a master tinsmith. Tinsmiths fabricate items such as water pitchers, forks, spoons, and candle holders. Unlike blacksmiths (who work mostly with hot metals), tinsmiths do the majority of their work on cold metal (although they might use a hearth to heat and help shape their raw materials). Tinsmith was a common occupation in pre-industrial times. By extension it can also refer to the person who deals in tinware, or tin plate. The profession may sometimes also be known as a tinner, tinker, tinman, or tinplate worker whitesmith may also refer to this profession, though the same word may also refer to an unrelated specialty of iron-smithing. Athyrium filix-femina is found in rich moist woods, thickets, fields, meadows and ravines throughout northern North America. It is relatively sun tolerant, in spite of its fine foliage. However, autumn fern can tolerate short periods of afternoon sunlight, but won’t perform well in intense heat or prolonged sunlight. Lady Fern has green lacy foliage, and is a deciduous clump. Another study, published in 2016, suggests that microwave radiation produced when lightning strikes the ground could become encapsulated in a plasma bubble, resulting in ball lightning.īall lightning has also been associated with earthquakes. Atmospheric ions could pile up at the surface of a window, producing enough of an electrical field on the other side to generate a discharge. The presence of glass may generate ball lightning, according to another theory published in 2012. Elmo's Fire, the stationary glow that is sometimes confused with ball lightning. This ionized air, or plasma, is the same condition that enables St. The Lanzhou researchers' paper supports the theory that ball lightning results from a ground strike that creates a reaction between oxygen and vaporized elements from the soil. EDITOR'S NOTE: Along with his son, Paul, and storm chaser Carl Young-his longtime collaborators-National Geographic explorer and storm chaser Tim Samaras died in a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, on May 31, 2013. Using one of the world's fastest cameras, a National Geographic explorer attempts to capture the birth of a lightning bolt. The spectrometer detected silicon, iron, and calcium in the ball, all of which were also present in the local soil. The ball appeared just after a lightning strike and traveled horizontally for about 10 meters (33 feet). Researchers from Lanzhou, China's Northwest Normal University inadvertently recorded a ball lightning event while studying a 2012 thunderstorm using video cameras and spectrometers. That said, scientists seem to agree ball lightning is real, even if they don't yet fully understand what causes it. That and other early accounts suggest that ball lightning can be deadly.Īt least one study has theorized that about half of all ball lightning sightings are hallucinations caused by the magnetic fields during storms. One of the first recorded sightings of ball lightning occurred in 1638, when a " great ball of fire" came through the window of an English church. The heat causes surrounding air to rapidly expand and vibrate, which creates thunder. A lightning flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. Lightning in general is an electrical discharge caused by positive and negative imbalances within clouds themselves, or between storm clouds and the ground. It's sometimes accompanied by a hissing sound and an acrid odor. The bizarre phenomenon, also known as globe lightning, usually appears during thunderstorms as a floating sphere that can range in color from blue to orange to yellow, disappearing within a few seconds. Instances of ball lightning-glowing, electric orbs in the sky-have captivated and mystified us for centuries. Take a look at the footer of a page in the Crowd documentation space. They weigh the box with that in mind, then charge you $38.74, resulting in $25.89 postage due. This means that the price is based on the weight and distance being sent. The Flat Rate you paid is disregarded and the USPS classifies your package as a Weight and Zone package. Then you ship your cards in a non-USPS box. Make sure to use Flat Rate packaging to save on shipping.Įxample: You paid for a Medium Flat Rate Box (costing $12.85) assuming it would cover any weight. Paying for Flat Rate and Using Your Own Boxīoxes that don’t say “Flat Rate” aren’t honored as such by the USPS. However, you accidentally use an Express envelope, which costs $22.46. Keep in mind that standard Flat Rate envelopes are red, while Express envelopes are blue.Įxample: You pay for a Padded Flat Rate Envelope, which costs $7.10. Any time you pay for a lower class and send in a higher one, you will be charged the difference or charged by the weight. Not only is this the wrong packaging it’s the wrong mail class. If you pay for a Padded Flat Rate Envelope and send in a Padded Flat Rate Express Envelope, you’ll wind up with postage due for the difference. You now have postage due in the amount of $55.32 for a total of $85.52. When they open and inspect the package’s contents, they discover that the box is full of Magic cards, not media. Since you utilized Media Mail service, your package is subject to inspection by the USPS in order to verify compliance. You’re relieved to see it will only cost $30.20. You remember hearing that media mail is less expensive. When you weigh the box, it’s clear it’s going to cost a ton. If you use media mailers for items that aren’t considered media, you may be fined or your mail may even be rejected by the USPS.Įxample: You use a box that’s not from the USPS. These packages are regulated and inspected. Don’t send any other items using this mail class. However, it should only be used for items that the USPS considers media, including books, tapes, CDs, DVDs, sheet music and recorded media. Media mail allows you to ship media at a more cost-efficient rate. This is tricky, as padded envelopes say “Flat Rate Envelope” in large font and only include “Padded” in small text next to the barcode. You paid for a Flat Rate Envelope (the $6.55 option) but used a Padded Flat Rate Envelope, which costs $7.10. This is because padded envelopes cost $0.55 in additional postage. A week later, you get a message from TCGplayer saying you owe $0.55 postage. You choose the padded option as it seems safer. One is simple cardboard and the other is a padded bubble mailer. You see two options with “Flat Rate Envelope” on them. You pay $6.55 and head to the Post Office for packing materials. The Priority Flat Rate Mail Class packages are organized as follows (from least to most expensive):Įxample: You print a prepaid Priority Flat Rate label. It’s important to pay close attention to the actual physical packaging material you send when selecting the mail class. If you pay postage for one type of package and send a different type, you’ll receive an additional charge for postage. Selecting the Wrong Package and Postage Types Please note that postage due packages are always compared to retail rates even if the original postage was paid at a commercial rate.
